Arbitration Award – Photo Radar\Red Light Tickets

Sometime in 2018, ATU initiated a grievance about photo radar/red light tickets. The City requires operators to both pay the ticket and receive discipline for infractions. The Union has always felt that this is both unfair and unreasonable.
Today, almost 3 years later, the arbitrator’s award was released. In a two-to-one decision, with the City nominee dissenting, the arbitration panel chaired by Arbitrator Norrie has deemed the City of Edmonton’s practice of requiring operators to pay the ticket to be a form of discipline AND unreasonable.
Norrie said the practice violates the Collective Agreement by imposing discipline without just cause. She ordered the City to cease the practice and to compensate operators who have paid the fine since the initiation of the grievance. This decision is a solid win for members of ATU Local 569 and I want to send my congratulations to VP Operations Daryll Miller and to Lawyer Pat Nugent and his team for a great success. Lets keep them coming!
